Volvo Group North America, in partnership with Entropy Solar Integrators and ConEdison Solutions, was looking for additional ways to reduce their carbon footprint, save money long-term, and fortify their reputation as a leader in sustainable transportation. Their Hagerstown, MD facility has already been leading the way in corporate clean energy. In 2014, it was named a Superior Energy Performance® Platinum-Certified Partner–the highest level in the U.S. Department of Energy program.
RBI Solar worked with Entropy and ConEdison to construct and install a 5,280 module solar canopy over the north parking lot of Volvo’s Hagerstown plant, making it one of the largest solar carport installations on the East Coast. The lot is expected to generate about 1.32 MW of clean electricity. In other words, the energy output of the solar canopy is equivalent to eliminating the annual greenhouse gas emissions of roughly 236 passenger vehicles. Not only does the canopy generate energy for some of the Volvo Group’s operations, but it also protects worker vehicles from the elements.
