Northampton Community College is one US college that has achieved Gold LEED status. The campus has a wind turbine and geothermal heating system in addition to 640.5 kW solar carports that will provide clean, efficient energy for decades. Energy generated from the solar carport structures powers the equivalent of about 500 homes. With these solar canopies, the vehicles of Northampton Community College students, faculty, staff, and visitors are protected from the elements.

Volvo’s 1.32 MW solar carport system at their Hagerstown, MD facility is one of the largest on the East Coast. This plant is already leading the way in sustainable energy—in 2014, the Hagerstown facility was named a Superior Energy Performance® Platinum-Certified Partner by the US Department of Energy. The energy generated by the carport structures eliminates the equivalent greenhouse gas emissions of 236 passenger vehicles annually. Owens Corning’s 2.43 MW carport structure is one of the largest of its kind in the Midwest, covering 935 east-west oriented parking spaces. A special drainage system was designed to allow melted snow and rain to flow away from the structures. These solar carports offset 1/3 of Owens Corning’s daily power usage, reducing 2,069 tons of carbon emissions each year—that’s the equivalent of 436 passenger vehicles. Real-time energy generation of the carports is displayed on a screen in the lobby of the Toledo facility.
